Contrast-Enhanced Imaging: Why Is Contrast Used and How Should You Prepare?

Contrast-enhanced imaging uses specialized contrast media to improve visualization of selected organs, blood vessels, and tissues during diagnostic imaging.

The contrast agent depends on the imaging modality. Iodinated contrast media are commonly used in CT examinations, while gadolinium-based agents are used for selected MRI studies. Contrast may be administered intravenously or by other routes according to the examination.

Before receiving contrast, patients should provide an appropriate medical history, particularly regarding any previous reaction to contrast media, relevant medical conditions, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and current medications. Renal function assessment may be appropriate in selected patients depending on the agent and clinical circumstances.

Serious reactions to contemporary contrast agents are uncommon, although radiology teams assess relevant risk factors and maintain appropriate procedures for managing adverse reactions.

A shellfish allergy does not represent a specific “iodine allergy” and, by itself, does not confer a unique risk from iodinated contrast media compared with other unrelated allergies.

Preparation requirements are not identical for every examination. Fasting, medication instructions, and other precautions should therefore follow the protocol for the specific imaging study and the patient’s clinical circumstances.
