Many infected individuals remain asymptomatic, but the infection can cause gastritis and is strongly associated with peptic ulcer disease. It is also an established risk factor for certain forms of gastric cancer.<\/p>\n<p>When symptoms occur, they may include upper abdominal pain or burning, bloating, frequent belching, nausea, reduced appetite, and unintended weight loss. However, these manifestations are nonspecific, and H. pylori infection cannot be diagnosed reliably from symptoms alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is H. pylori diagnosed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Non-invasive tests for active infection include the <strong>urea breath test<\/strong> and <strong>stool antigen testing<\/strong>. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy may be appropriate in selected patients or when further evaluation of the upper gastrointestinal tract is required.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed H. pylori infection should be treated with an appropriate eradication regimen that includes antibiotics and acid-suppressive therapy. The choice of regimen should account for relevant clinical factors and antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, symptom improvement alone does not confirm successful eradication.
